Posted By Eric Gomes: Undefeated junior-welterweight champion Terence Crawford (30-0, 21 KO’s) faces Felix Diaz in the main arena at Madison Square Garden May 20, 2017. Original reports stated the fight would take place in Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center. Rio 2016 Olympian Silver Medalist Shakur Stevenson (who is from Newark) has been rumored to be added to the card. Top Rank has not confirmed this rumor. Stevenson, however, must first successfully win his pro-debut on April 22nd in Los Angeles, CA.
The Madison Square Garden venue will be scaled down from a roughly 20,000-seat capacity to between 9,000 and 10,000 for May 20th said Top Rank President Todd duBoef to RingTV.com.
In an interview with RingTV.com Todd duBoef said the following:
If Shakur Stevenson is on the Crawford-Diaz card, it would’ve been nice to see the card take place in Newark. Stevesnson is from Newark. Either way Crawford, the main event is not from either New Jersey or New York. Fellow Olympian Michael Conlan received the red-carpet treatment in his pro debut. Conlan, of Irish decent turned pro at Madison Square Garden in March on St. Patrick’s Day weekend. New York has a big Irish population full of loyal fans and Irish pubs. Conlan walked out with fellow countryman, the biggest UFC star Conor McGregor. McGregor may possibly face Floyd Mayweather Jr. next. Would be nice to see Stevenson get the same opportunity to fight in a ready-made crowd.
I think Top Rank is banking on the fact that Crawford has previously fought in New York. In addition, his opponent Felix Diaz is from the Dominican Republic, the New York area has large hispanic communities mostly made up of: Dominican, Cuban, and Puerto Rican.
Diaz is a 2008 Gold Medalist who last fought in December in his homeland of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The sole loss on his record comes from his fight against Lamont Peterson. Some spectators believe Diaz should’ve won. Diaz has beaten recent Adrien Broner foe Adrian Granados; as well as Sammy Vasquez when he was undefeated.
This will be Crawford’s fifth title defense at 140 lbs. Diaz has publicly called Terence Crawford out for quite some time now. Now Diaz will now get his crack at the skillful ambidextrous fighter. A news conference will be held at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday so Top Rank can formally announce the fight.
