Written By Bakari Simpson: This Friday, January 12, the history making Claressa “T-Rex” Shields (4-0, 2 KO’s) is back in action. The Flint, Michigan bruiser will defend her IBF and WBC super-middleweight titles against undefeated challenger Tori “Sho-Nuff” Nelson (17-0-3, 2 KO’s). Housed in the Turning Stone Resort and Casino, Showtime Boxing will air the dustup at 10pm. Claressa Shields’ first title defense of both straps.

Despite her flawless record, few are giving Nelson much of a shot at victory. Admittedly, Tori’s gaunt level activity does give some credence to this bleak assumption. Nelson only fought a scant one time apiece in 2017 and 2016. In 2015, Nelson laced up for professional combat twice. The last time that Tori had a truly busy year was in 2014 when she notched five professional outings. Being 41 certainly will not aid the noxious nana in against the Michigan mauler.

On top of all of this, Nelson has to divide her time between boxing and a full-time gig at IHOP. Presently, boxing alone does not pay all the bills. This being the case, Tori has done what’s needed to keep pursuing her fighting ambitions. Nelson pays it all little mind though, she has seen rougher days.

“There was a time when I was as single mother with two kids, working three jobs and boxing. I was a bus driver, worked in a cafeteria and at IHOP. I’d be up at 5:30 am and wouldn’t finish until 10pm some nights…God has brought me through it. Without Jesus in me and God in front of me, I wouldn’t be where I am. I’m fighting with faith.” -Tori Nelson

Named after the fictional Shogun of Harlem Sho-Nuff, by trainer Craig Fladager, Tori is eager to topple Shields. If successful, she will reveal herself as the true master of the super middleweight division.

For her part, Shields is little concerned with Tori. While still learning on the job Claressa does acknowledges Nelson’s longer resume. T-Rex just does not believe that anything Tori does will be enough. When asked about her thoughts about the overall outcome, Shields was straight forward as a sharp jab.

“You know, for Tori, because she has more experience I’m going to give her the 7th… But you know what, I feel like its going to come before that, but I’m just going to [say] the seventh to be respectful.” -Claressa Shields

With both women bristling with confidence, only bloody warfare will crown a victor. Will age and experience claim the day? Or with youth, power and ferocity be too much? To find out, you’ll just have to tune into Showtime! Don’t miss it; this should be a fun one…
