Claressa Shields Signs with Salita Promotions

Written By Bakari Simpson: Current poster-girl for women’s boxing. Claressa Shields has officially signed to Salita Promotions. Shields chose the smaller troupe as the next move for her career. From the outside looking in, loyalty and region played a large role in this important decision. This is a smart move as opposed to signing with a larger promoter who may prioritize it’s ready-made stars. Women’s boxing is definitely making a splash in the last year, however, it’s not quite mainstream yet.

Dmitriy Salita, a semi-retired fighter, founded the Salita Promotions in 2010. Based in Brooklyn, New York, by way of Odesa, Ukraine, Salita recognized a need for his services. The ambitious boxer and businessman sought to fill the void he perceived that existed in the area. As a result, Dmitriy has amassed a concentration of international and Mid-western fighters in his stable.

The small company has three Michigan fighters (Larry Ventas, Jerico O’Quinn and Claressa Shields). Of this stable two New Yorkers (Nikolay Potapov and Jarell Miller).  Salita also has two Ohio pugilists (Antonio Nieves and Wesley Tucker).

“Claressa is an outstanding world-class athlete, who has the ability to transcend sports like Michael Jordan and Serena Williams. She also has the charisma to appeal to a broad new generation of fans, who will tune in to watch her fights and will want to come to arenas to experience her performance live.

“The state of Michigan has been home to many. Fighters like Joe Louis, Tommy Hearns, Floyd Mayweather and now Claressa Shields. I look forward to working with Claressa on her already historic career. At only 22 years old I believe Claressa will continue to break records, set new limits and break boundaries in and out of the ring.” -Dmitriy Salita

As a result, 95% of all Salita Promotions cards have taken place in either Michigan or New York. The underlining logic behind Claressa’s signing with Salita becomes more evident. Salita Promotions also promoted Shields last outing. Shields square off against Szilvia Szabados on March 10, 2017. The bout took place in Michigan at the MGM Grand Detroit.

“Dmitriy’s knowledge and expertise in Claressa’s home-base market of Detroit provides the perfect complements to Claressa’s once-in-a-century talent and determination to advance women’s boxing and change the sport of boxing forever” -Mark Taffet, Shields Co-manager

Thus far, matriculating into this cozy promotional company appears to have been a savvy move.

Shields is the only American to win 2 gold medals male or female. The accomplished knuckle-chucker brought home the highest honors from the London (2012) and Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games (2016). This came after amassing an impressive amateur record of 77-1. The only woman to defeat Shields, Savannah Marshall, recently signed with Mayweather Promotions.

Claressa is happy to face her next opponent. Mery Rancier (7-8-3, 5 KO’s) officially a part of the Salita stable. T-Rex will face Rancier in an 8-rounder contested at the Masonic Temple in Detroit. This exciting fight is a part of Salita Promotions ongoing “Detroit Brawl” series. The June 16th bout will mark the 6th Salita Promotions event held an event at the Masonic Temple since February 2, 2016. It is the intention of both promoter and pugilist to harness this substantial built-in market.

“Thank Salita Promotions for the commitment they have shown to me. I promise all boxing fans that I will dedicate myself to being not only the world’s No.1 female boxer and No.1 pound-for-pound, but also a torchbearer for boxing and women the world over. Can’t wait to get in the ring on June 16th to continue the journey”
